Hey, thanks for the shout out, and the great post. One thing — “Mechanical Turk” is actually a wonderfully apt name. It refers to the phony automaton created by Wolfgang von Kempelen in 1770. (Yes, I had to check wikipedia for those particular facts –
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Turk ). It pretended to be a chess-playing robot, essentially, and wowed spectators until it was revealed to be hiding a person inside who was actually choosing the moves and operating the machine.

This Amazon service is similar, in that it presents a facade of automation (and the ease of integration with truly systematic processes that goes along with it) over actual human intelligence. In essence, it too is hiding a person in a machine.

I knew George Peck back in the late ’70s–one amazing abstract painter. The surface and color fields he created –always made me think more of Rothko than Kelly. You are very lucky to have those fine fine paintings –hope you get to hang them again — they should be out and on view!
